Introduction to Logging:
Introduction:

Thank you for your interest in seeing how our family harvests wood on a small
scale. This harvesting operation is being done to provide spruce board sheathing
for a new woodworking shop. The spruce logs shown harvested in the following
webpages will be sawn into lumber using a small portable bandsaw mill.
Mission:

The mission of theis timber harvest is to select large diameter Spruce Logs. The
larger size ensures less trees are harvested, less time is wasted in harvesting the
logs, less time is wasted in sawing the logs into lumber, and that wider boards
will be obtained for sheating. While not a contributing factor per se, removing
larger, more mature trees from the forest also will enable smaller trees in the
forest to have better light and access to nutrients that would otherwise go to the
larger tree that was harvested.
Tools:

  • Chainsaw-046 Stihl with 24" bar
  • Tractor-25 HP 4X4 Kubota tractor

Safety Gear:

I also use a minimal amount of safety equipment, but the following is what I wear
and should be considered the MINIMAL amount.
  • Steel Toed Boots
  • Thick Leather Gloves
